An ode to volunteers

To mark Volunteers Week, I wanted to write something about the flaws in our society that allow an over-dependence on volunteers. The free labour that props up incredible projects like ours. However, I had a change of heart and reckon the week should really focus on saying “thank you” …
Thank you …
For your passion for the role
For your compassion for people
For playing your part in our little community
For turning up when the venue is cold and the weather is grim
For arriving in the dark at 6.30am to receive a bed delivery
For recognising the ubuntu; that I can only be because you are
For mopping the floor when it wasn’t you who spilled anything
For cleaning the kitchen when another group left it in a mess
For making a much needed cuppa
For making a cake or bringing some biscuits
For being kind and gracious in difficult circumstances
For smiling and welcoming strangers
For smiling and welcoming me!
For lifting when your knees need replacing
For speaking clearly to people when you’re afraid
For speaking kindly and gently to me and for showing that you care
For listening
For giving it a go, even when you weren’t 100% convinced.
For being a team player, when you’d rather go it alone.
For showing up when you are sick and grieving
For helping others who are struggling when you’re struggling yourself.
For making a difference
For brightening up someone else’s day
For brightening up my day
For acting justly, showing mercy and walking humbly.
Thank you for being you.

  1. Cathy, typical of you to spend some time preparing such an appropriate and kindly thank you to all the volunteers. I’m sure you know everyone appreciates all you do to make Micah work and support all those who need a little help.
    Thank you too !!
